Only one type of head shape is officially recognized as a true Chihuahua.
But here's the twist: neither "apple head" nor "deer head" are actual breeds or varieties.

🧠 So, technically — NEITHER is correct.

These are informal, made-up labels used to describe the general head shape of Chihuahuas. While they might sound official, only one of them aligns with the breed standard, and the other is just a popular nickname.

🐶 So what does the breed standard actually say?

All major kennel clubs (ANKC, AKC, FCI, etc.) describe the apple-domed skull as part of the official standard for the Chihuahua.
That means:

✅ Apple Head = aligns with the breed standard

❌ “Deer Head” = not recognized by any breed registry

The term “apple head” is simply a descriptive feature, not a separate breed or variety. It refers to the correct round skull shape, with a short muzzle and well-defined stop (forehead slope).

In contrast, “deer head” is just a nickname people often use to describe pet Chihuahuas with a longer snout, flatter skull, or more slender build — traits that aren’t part of the show standard.

✅ There are only two coat varieties of Chihuahua:

  • Smooth Coat
  • Long Coat

That’s it. No “teacup,” no “deer head,” no “head type” varieties — just Chihuahuas in two coat types, with a correct head shape if you’re sticking to the breed standard.

💛 But here’s the good news:

If your Chi is healthy, happy, and loved — it’s still 100% your dog.
Whether they’re pedigree, pet shop, rescue, or mystery mix — if they melt your heart, they’re perfect.
